Most resorts have a private medical centre.
To receive free medical treatment in the public health system in Spain you need to obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK.
This card does not cover you for any private medical treatment – make sure you take out the appropriate travel insurance.
The main shopping areas in Menorca are to be found in Mahón and Ciutadella.
The shops are generally open between 10-13:30 and 17:00-20:00 although it is becoming more common for shops to be open all day, particularly in the resorts.
Most supermarkets are open from 9:00 – 21:00, with many now opening Sunday morning 9:30-14:00.
Most banks are only open Monday to Friday 8:30-14:00.
There are cash machines to be found in most resorts but charges can be high. You will normally be informed of charges applicable, and be given the chance to cancel the operation if you wish to do so.
There are a multitude of activities, restaurants and beaches in Menorca, all waiting to be visited.
Pick up one of the many free guides to be found at the airport or in hotels and shops and take the time to plan and make the most of your holiday!
Be careful to fill your car with the correct fuel:
Petrol (‘gasolina’) : green pump
Diesel (‘gasoleo’) : black pump
In nearly all urban areas, the speed limit is 30km/h
On the main Mahon – Ciutadella road the speed limit is 90 km/h (to be confirmed!) but this does reduce down to 70km/h and even 50km/h at various points.
Be careful to stick to the limits for your own safety, and also because there are several fixed speed cameras on the island, as well as at least one police vehicle with a speed camera fitted, and the fines are heavy, from 100 to 500 euros.
Most towns offer Pay and Display parking – generally denoted by blue road markings.
These are a reasonable option if you just wish to park for a maximum of a couple of hours. You normally have to pay for this parking between 9:30 and 14:00, 17:00 and 20:00, Monday to Friday, and 9:30 until 14:00 on Saturdays – but please check on the machine, as times may vary.
If you do go over the allotted time and receive a fine, there are instructions, in English, on the machine on how to pay the fine immediately. If you do this the fine is reduced to about 3 or 4 euros.
If you see any of the following signs – don’t park there!
Seatbelts are compulsory for everyone and heavy fines payable if you are caught by the police not wearing them.
Children under the age of 12 must sit in the rear of the car on a booster seat. Alternatively you can bring, and use, a seat belt height adjuster if you have one.
An appropriate baby seat must be used for infants.
In the event of a breakdown at the side of the road you must put on the high-visibility waistcoats provided before exiting the vehicle. You must then place the supplied warning triangles 50 metres in front of, and behind the vehicle. Then give us a call.
